Users and Groups, Root Access, Ubuntu
I've already posted this in the ubuntu section with no luck... i really would like a fix to this because i want to use remastersys to redistribute my ubuntu to friends, but i cannot do it with this bug.
also, how do i get to login from root? what i thought was the root password ain't working! basically here's the story: after i tried to add a new user, I cannot open the Users and Groups panel anymore, I get a message saying I am not allowed to accedd the configuration. I also tried accessing it from the terminal using users-admin and the error i get is Code:
invalid string constant "#E4E4E4", expected valid string constant (users-admin:7611): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated Also it is interestimng to note that afgter adding that user i couldnt sudo anymore with my old one. I had to visudo and add myself to sudoers list. Could this be because i called the other user simply admin? Any clue is most welcome. |
I don't use Ubuntu (Slackware 12.2) but here's what I'd try:
1. To reset the root password... 1. Put your install CD in the drive and reboot the machine (booting from the install CD, of course). Login as root. 2. Create a directory, something like /mnt/temp. 3. Mount your root partition to the directory you've created: mount -t ext3 /dev/hda1 /mnt/temp Be sure to substitute your filesystem and root partition. 4. Once it's mounted: chroot /mnt/temp 5. Enter 'passwd' or 'passwd root' and you'll be prompted to reset the root password. 6. Remove the install CD, reboot and login. 2. Next, you might want to remove the last user you added, just to be safe: userdel <user> If that doesn't work, edit the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files and remove the line for that user. 3. Referring to 'invalid string constant "#E4E4E4", expected valid string constant ', #E4E4E4 is RGB hex for a light gray color, if that lights any bulbs. 4. Naming the new user something other than 'admin' might not be a bad idea. |
