User name does not accept "." in version 9

Friends,
We have a linux 7 pop3 mailserver with 50 users. All the login names are created like firstname.lastname ( eg. xxx.yyy). Now we want to upgrade the server to linux 9 and it seems version 9 does not allow us to create login name with a "." (period) in it. How to over come this situation ?
Thanks for the reply.

I never would have considered actually using usernames with '.', instead I use aliases. However - I'm 95% sure that LDAP Authentication can handle this issue.

you want your users to receive mail as

joe.bob

create a user joebob

useradd joebob

create an alias for joe.bob pointing to the user joebob in /etc/mail/aliases or /etc/aliases.

joe.bob: joebob
