user cannot login to graphical-system

hey linux gurus !

think i got a noobie prob here:

As root user everything is working fine.
As normal user i cannot login (anymore) to the graphical system .... ( KDE, GNOME )
.. when sending login-info it is starting.. screen gets black .. then shortly showing the nvidia symbol ..(now the gui should be displayd .. but it is returning to login-prompt.

first time this occured after i was "forced" to push it's power_botton ...

there is a entry in /var/log/Xorg.0.log :

(==) Mouse[1]: Emulate3Buttons, Emulate3Timeout: 50
(**) Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
(**) Mouse[1]: ZAxisMapping: buttons 4 and 5
(**) Mouse[1]: Buttons: 5
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Mouse[1]" (type: MOUSE)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Keyboard[0]" (type: KEYBOARD)
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "NVIDIA Event Handler" (type: Other)
(II) Mouse[1]: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID, removing from list!

i tried to add a new user .. but also this user cannot login to x.

.... jeah i know ... only a fool cuts of power on a running linux ... but ..shit happens... ...

someone could give me a hand to get around this ?

thank you

chris

It could be the permissions for /dev/nvidia*
On my Mandriva2006 the settings are:
Code:
[pingu@killbill local]$ ls -l /dev/nvidia*
crw-rw---- 1 pingu video 195, 0 dec 12 14:08 /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw---- 1 pingu video 195, 255 dec 12 14:08 /dev/nvidiactl

thanks.. but i think no effect .. i ckecked mine are:

igsup1:~ # ls -l /dev/nvidia*
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 0 Mar 19 2005 /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 0 Mar 19 2005 /dev/nvidia00
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 1 Mar 19 2005 /dev/nvidia01
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 2 Mar 19 2005 /dev/nvidia02
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 3 Mar 19 2005 /dev/nvidia03
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 1 Mar 19 2005 /dev/nvidia1
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 2 Mar 19 2005 /dev/nvidia2
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 3 Mar 19 2005 /dev/nvidia3
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 255 Mar 19 2005 /dev/nvidiactl
igsup1:~ #

i also added the user to group video

if i chgrp nvidoa0 and nvidiactl to video... still cannot login with user ... the'r re-chgrp'd to root when i login as root ..

btw: why are those files not set to rwx

How about the /home partition - is it full?
Another thing to check is /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or similar), might also check /var/log/messages.
But here's one thing that might be of interrest, from your /var/kog/kdm.log :
Code:
AUDIT: Thu Dec 15 13:14:49 2005: 8700 X: client 19 rejected from local host
Client rejected
To me this sounds like some kind of permission problem - unfortunately I have no idea how to tackle it?
