use 'at' to run x apps?

trying to get mp3s to wake me up in the morning. If I open a terminal in X and execute...

$ xmms *.mp3

...it works. But when I try...

$ at now
at> xmms *.mp3
at> <EOT>

...it doesn't. Should it? Or am I stupidly overlooking something obvious?

Even if you were logged in as the user that
runs the at-demon the demon still wouldn't know
anything about the name of the DISPLAY variable.

I think you'd either have to do a little workaround.

To your .xsession file add a
xhost +localhost

And for your starting of mp3's use something like:
xterm -display localhost:0.0 -e xmms *.mp3
(You might have to play withe parameters...)

OR (I'd prefer that solution ;})
run
mpg321 which doesn't need to know about X ;)

Cheers,
Tink

ah... I see

Last night I did an apropos on 'mp3' and it didn't find anything. I'm sure it's there; I'll check tonight. Running Red Hat 8.0 There are so many little programs. OOh, that just made me think of something. (8.0) I downloaded a plugin for xmms that was an mp3 decoder. That's proly not gonna work for mpg321, huh? Is there some sort of system-wide .rpm for mp3 decoding?

There's lame (and liblame) ... but you'll still need
an executable to run that.

However, mpg321
works just fine and the binary rpm is only 58K in ;)

Tink

stupidness...

I think the problem was that I didn't provide a full path to the mp3s. It's always just little stuff like that. I'm still catching on to how to use these daemons.

I did go and get mpg321 so I don't have to have an x session up.

thanks,
florestan
