USB Keyboard does not work during RedHat installation
 

Hi,

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 with WIN2K on it. These are the specs of my computer :

Memory : 196 MB
Maximum Video Resolution : 1600 x 1200 Pixels
Processor type : Duron
Processor Speed : 750 MHz
Hard Drive 1: 30 GB
Hard Drive 2 : 10 GB
Graphics Card : 8MB Nvidia TNT2 Vanta LT Graphics Card
Monitor : Compaq MV940
Mouse : Wheel Mouse (ps /2 ) - Compaq
Keyboard : USB - Compaq

I am trying to install RedHat 9.0 and my USB keyboard goes dead after the first screen ... (ie on the 2nd "Media Check screen" ) It is to be noted that I can go from the 1st menu screen to 2nd screen by hitting an ENTER !!!!!!! ( I am able to type on the 1st screen ) As soon as the second screen appears the USB keyboard goes dead :( All lights on keyboard go off and none of the keys work ..

Initially I had installed RedHat 6.0 on the same system and there was no problem with the USB keyboard ... I checked the BIOS setting and the USB option is enabled. I installed the RedHat 9.0 with the "linux nousb" option and rebooted, but only to find that the keyboard still would not work :(:(
During the installation I was able to type in the root password ... I wonder how did it work then ?????????

SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!!

PS : Will it work if I plug in a serial keyboard and install and later pull it off and put back my USB keyboard ??

Looks like nobody is helping me out here :(:( I have been experimenting
few things to solve my problem .... To get rid of the USB keyboard problem while installing RedHat 9.0, I plugged in a serial keyboard and performed the installation. Everything went smoothly.
I rebooted the system with the USB keyboard plugged in, and removed the other keyboard.
I read the messsage "Initialising USB keyboard ......... DONE" and thought it may work !
Alas !!!!!! I got a bunch of "usb_control/blk_msg : timeout " and the keyboard had gone
dead :(:( I tried running kudzu , but looks like fate has turned a red eye on me ...
I got the message "sdbconfig not found" or something like that and the system hung ......

ANYBODY help me out here ....... How do I configure and get a USB keyboard working on
RedHat 9.0 ?????? I have 4 USB ports ....

I assume USB keyboard is enabled in your BIOS.

and Plug and Play is turned off ?


Just a couple of ideas..

Does your mouse work? If so, choose a different keyboard type/driver.

Do you have a generic keyboard around you could use to install RH with?

My Wheel mouse (PS/2) works fine. In the beginning of the RedHat 9 installation,
hardware probe detects this mouse , monitor and graphics card. But it does not detect
the USB keyboard. Also during installation, I do not get any keyboard
configuration screens :(:( ........ I get the mouse configuration screen where I select wheel mouse
(ps/2) as detected earlier.

I somehow managed to install RedHat using another serial keyboard which I got from office.
I plugged in the USB keyboard and rebooted , all the USB initializations are done during bootup,
ie HID, keyboard etc, but I get the message "usb_control/blk_msg : timeout" What is the meaning of this message ? Is this the reason why my keyboard does not work ? How do I fix this ? I looked into the BIOS settings and saw "Legacy USB keyboard : ENABLE" Other than this
there is no other USB option. I have a Compaq Presario 5000 and the system properties says "HID keyboard device" - working properly. Also this same USB keyboard works fine with RedHat 6.0 which I had installed earlier ?

Is there some way of configuring / setting up the USB keyboard after I reboot the system with a serial keyboard ? ie running kudzu or something ? NOTE : running kudzu on RedHat 9.0 hangs the system. What is the alternative for kudzu ?
