USB CF Reader

Hi,
I am trying to get my CF reader configured unedr Mandrake 8.1. I have been to Linux-USB.org and followed the instructions there however when I look for the device to appear in /dev as sda it doesn't. In /proc/bus/usb the device is listed in devices as a Shuttle Technologies CF/SM Mass Storage device but there are no devices listed in /proc/scsi. As I don't have any SCSI devices or a CDRW in this machine does it mean that SCSI support was not included when the installation took place? If so how do I turn it on?

TIA

Ian
