USA: Can't get a video codec on SUSE! Is it true?

Is it true what I heard that "No video applications will work in SUSE"? Because of patent laws? Sure doesn't sound like a problem one would have in a "free country". What the *%#@ is going on? We seem to be losing a 2 civil rights a day since the monkey boy got into office.

I never heard of that. I think you have to understand: Suse isn't delivered with codecs.
Use mplayer:
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/news.html
You have to download codecs separately and put it in the right folder (see docs).

Suse is delivered with a crippled version of Xine (the video playing engine), which blocks you from using certain codecs, even if you do install them.

However, it is relatively simple to install a normal version of Xine on top of the Suse version, by downloading the latest version from the Xine homepage (www.zinehq.de). Once you've done that, and installed the codecs, you can play what you like.

To install the latest Xine, the easiest thing to do is download the appropriate RPM, and install it directly on top of the existing Suse version. The down side is that you won't be able to update Xine using Suse's online update any more (if you do, it'll revert to the cripped version). But on the other hand, the latest version from the Xine homepage is likely to be newer than Suse's own version anyway.

The patent and/or licensing issues still exist, of course, so make sure you're okay with those before installing the codecs.

We are losing rights everywhere---for one simple reason: Our society has become infinitely more complex as it also struggles with globalization....Open Source offers freedom that will defy control by small-brained politicians but there will, of course, be nuisances along the way.
Interesting paradox: If current trends continue, we will wind up being one of the less free countries in the world---eg if our government continues to be ineffective in dealing with the likes of MS, Sony, Enron, etc.

Thanks for the advise. Linux is the best. I didn't have any desire to use video until I increased my D/L Speed. I'm sure you get a good working version of Xine in Europe. Where Microsuck doesn't rule.

SuSE was once a German product. It is now owned by Novell which is based in Waltham, Massachusetts, USA.

Actually, the law that prohibits codecs from being included is the DMCA... signed by BILL CLINTON.

Check your facts before you go blaming someone.
