I have downloaded every RPM needed by kde (everyone that was there in the Fedora Directory) and i still get dependency errors. The closest i get is when it says it needs "arts-required by arts devel" i get this when i am trying to install the arts package that it says it needs.

That was the easiest way by far!

Simple visit to Utilities/Control Panel or right mouse button/Configure Desktop would do the trick with Win drives/CDROM icons.

Gald that I could help ...

Hm, I have the same, plus a lot of extra rpm's that were needed. I started from a fresh install.
Thanks for the post though!

I don't know whether it is going to help but read these if you are using SuSE 9:

newbie, totally lost

Decided to snub the evil Microsoft and give Linux a go. Used UNIX at uni (you could always find a free UNIX workstation for email and web browsing, but the PS/2's (yeah, I'm that old) were always jammed) so I am not a complete muppet. Got SUSE 9 off a cover disk and it came with KDE 3.1 and installed to a second HD (SATA - ok recognised it - kudos and all... but). Got another cover disk at the same time with KDE 3.2 on it.. Tried to upgrade. No joy. First I tried using rpm -Fvh *.rpm in the directory full of packages. It threw up a lot of dependency issues - as I understand it files I should have but don't. QT is apparently one of these. Tried getting that and I think I got the right thing. Tried following instructions. ./configure and make throw up 'unknown command'. Did more looking through forums and help pages. Turns out that make is missing from my path. So is any valid C compiler as I found out when I tried installing GMake. YAST throws up all manner of conflicts and dependency problems and is a bewildering nonsense to me. And this is a clean, default out the box SUSE 9 installation... I haven't been able to make any changes at all.. So I have the following questions and points:

1. How do I modify my path? How do I get a C compiler and make on my system so I can at least try to install what I need..? How do I find them if I have them and the damn thing doesn't realise it?

2. Where do I find all the files I then need to install before I upgrade to KDE 3.2??

3. If I can't solve this by sun down, how do I get this worthless crap off my system so I'm back where I started? Can I just wipe the partition? What about the OS booter?

6. If this were a machine in my office it would have cost twice the price of XP professional in downtime already. With the notable exception of this forum, Linux is not a friendly place for the desktop consumer trying to convert from windows. I have been deeply disappointed. Not least cos I now know that Microsoft will surely win the desktop war. Well, what war. It's no contest. Linux isn't justifying the space on my HD at the moment.

Sorry to be ha

I'm a linux newbie and i really find it very interesting (cause i definetely want to try sth else than MS), but i trully think it's ridiculous (to say the least) if you have to take care ALL of these things just for an upgrade...I mean that way, linux will never be able to compete with Windows in home user environments..It's just too d@mn unfriendly!
Pls don't flame, i'm on the linux side too...I won't give up that easily, it's just a personal opinion.

try this

or1onas:

Look at this post. It might help since you have similar problems with that guy and explained him how I did it.

Thanx astrosapiens, but in the meantime i tried the yast2 --install *.rpm and it worked out fine!
KDE 3.2.1 works perfectly and i must say that it's the best GUI i've ever seen in a home computer!
Thank you all guys 4 helping out!

Corlinux 04-13-2004 07:54 AM

What do yo know about upgrading to kde 3.2.1 on a Red Hat 9 Distro? I cannot do it 'cause i've problems with dependencies, but the real problem is when i try to install qt3.3.1 'cause it says that can't find /usr/bin/qt-3.1 and i looked for it and this package is right there.

Help me please...
