upgrading to gnome

I installed linux, but the command prompt only version, and now would like to be able to upgrade it to be able to open a gnome or kde desktop session from the command prompt. I tried installing the packages that I thought would get the job done: ie gnome-panel, but i can't figure out what I need to do.
Anyhelp is appreciated.

thanks
shaun

firstly you need to install the X server and configure that, then you can run the window manager of your choice. You have provided no useful information about your system. please prvoide useful information if you are seeking specific help.

1. What distribution are you using?

2. What packages did you install?

3. Is XFree86 (and its dependancies installed)?

4. Have you run "xf86config" as root to set up X?

To start GNOME, edit your /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file (as root) and delete the commands that load the Window Manager (probobly something like "exec twm") and add:

gnome-session

Then use the command "startx" to run X w/ GNOME.

Thank you guys. Installing the xFree86 and using startx seems to have solved my problem. I appreciate the help.
