I am on a Mandrake 9.1 server. Right now I am using a graphical interface(KDE) to upgrade these two programs because I thought it would be easier, if not I can use SSH. Anyways, Can I just use the rpm helper installer to install php? Do I have to uninstall it first? How do I do that? I just need some detailed instructions to upgrade/install PHP to 4.3.9. I read the documentation but I just cannot get it.

Aside from that I am using MySQL 4.0.11 and want to upgrade to 4.0.23. Do I need to uninstall that first as well? Is it easy to upgrade these two programs? Can someone show me a better guide or just get me started? Thanks.

I would ask in the distributions/mandrake group. I am using SuSe, was using Redhat before and noticed that each distro installs Apache /Php / MySql differently: (this means in different directories).

Basically all you need is make the files newer - but where are they and how apache is installed and configured in your system - is distribution specific, if , and that is often the case, you installed apache / php / mysql with your distro.
