upgrading linux on multiple systems

Hello,
I am using SuSe Linux 9.1 pro which comes with 2.6.4 kernel. I have upgrated it to 2.6.8.1. I have several other systems running SuSe 9.1. I wanted to upgrade all of them with the latest kernel. So, I copied over the vmlinuz-2.6.8.1 kernel image, initrd-2.6.8.1 and modules for 2.6.8.1 onto another system(exactly same box) and updated the grub for the same.

Now when I rebooted the system, it hanged complaining that it could not find and uncompress ramdisk on block 0 (I am using hd(0,0)). So I logged back in with my old kernel and recreated the initrd-2.6.8.1 using mk_initrd on that box. I rebooted it with new kernel and it all worked fine.

Q1: Does anyone have any idea why do I need to re-create the ramdisk image? Is it system specific?
Q2: How can I create a distrinution of the updated kernel, so that I can updated all my systems?
