Question Upgrading GRUB on DSL

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi,

I'm using Damn Small Linux and I'm trying to upgrade the kernel from 2.4 to 2.6. The installed version of GRUB 0.91 and apparently kernels 2.5+ require GRUB 0.97. Now my problem is that since Damn Small Linux don't produce any GRUB ports beyond 0.95, I'm having to install it from source. Do I need to remove GRUB 0.91 first or is there a way of upgrading it? And if I have to remove it, how would I go about doing it? (N.B. There's no official package manager governing the base system in Damn Small Linux)

hi

gosh did not realise it was so quaint.

grab any good live cd...that has a patched grub for inode sizes....
I suggest sidux is great.

boot the live cd....leave your menu as is
copy the files from the live cd folder system and overwrite your current ones.

YMMV but consider this pathway for sidux
/sbin/grub-install
/sbin/update-grub
/usr/lib/grub
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/e2fs_stage1_5
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/fat_stage1_5
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/iso9660_stage1_5
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/jfs_stage1_5
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/minix_stage1_5
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/reiserfs_stage1_5
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/stage1
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/stage2
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/stage2_eltorito
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/xfs_stage1_5
/usr/sbin/grub
/usr/sbin/grub-floppy
/usr/sbin/grub-install
/usr/sbin/grub-md5-crypt
/usr/sbin/grub-mkdevicemap
/usr/sbin/grub-probe
/usr/sbin/grub-reboot
/usr/sbin/grub-set-default
/usr/sbin/grub-terminfo
/usr/sbin/update-grub

then copy the relevant stage* files into /boot

after copying the files over run grub in su mode to install and re-embed the links for the stage1 and stage files
