Hello,
I'm currently running RedHat Enterprise Linux AS Release 3 on an IBM thinkpad. I use the version of Evolution (1.4.5) which was the RedHat installer included when I set the system up. Unfortunately though I use it against an Exchange server and it's a bit buggy. Novell has recently released version 2.2.1.1 which I'm told is much better. So, I downloaded the sources and the README indicates that it requires Gnome 2.6 or newer. Gnome is largely a mystery to me, I've been running Linux for about a year but frankly I've mostly just viewed the desktop as the thing I use to launch my xterms
I'm willing to upgrade Gnome if I have to but I have a few (simple) questions as I'm in unchartered territory (for me) here.
(1) How can I find out what version of Gnome I'm running now? When I run 'rpm -qa | grep -i gnome', I get 15 or 20 different packages which include the word 'gnome' all with different version numbers and none named just 'gnome'.
(2) According to
www.gnome.org, version 2.10 is the latest and greatest. Is v 2.10 newer than v2.6?
(3) Is
www.gnome.org the right place to be looking for gnome or should I be looking at redhat.com?
(4) Would it be possible to install a new version of gnome and retain the old one in case something goes wrong? If so, how do I specify which one is loaded when I log onto the system?
If anyone can straighten me out on any of these issues, I'd really appreciate it. I want to make sure I'm at least heading in the right direction before I dive into this stuff. Thanks!
