I know there are tutorials on the internet that point out how to upgrade to KDE 4.2, but last time I tried using one of them........ well, I had to reinstall all slack .
Would anyone be so kind and tell me how I would be able to safely upgrade KDE 3.5 to KDE 4.2.0 ?
You really want to read the README here. It was written by Robby Workman who did the KDE4 build scripts for Slackware.
Unfortunately a very old thread, but it's always fun (ironically meant) when old links goes from active to dead. Finding information that actually gives something sometimes seem to be impossible.
Don't do it. Wait for Slackware 13 or move to current. At the time this was written, it was possible to use the KDE4 packages in current to install KDE4 on Slackware 12.2. Since then, current has evolved considerably and the KDE4 packages won't run on 12.2.

I actually made KDE 4 run on 12.2, but there's (still) some issues with kickoff (and probably the rest too), that I want to solve. After that, I have a documentation (in swedish) to release.
But I guess it depends on how you mean with won't run. Which packages is it?

I haven't been looking at the packages to figure out which is the culprit. Given how extensive the changes are in current, it could be all of them. Compiling KDE4 from source on a 12.2 platform would certainly get around the problem, however I'm content to just wait for 13 to be released and upgrade the whole thing.
