Upgrade Problems

I'm running Libranet 2.7 and recently upgraded my kernel to 2.6.5. I did this by running

# apt-cache search kernel-image-2.6.5 which produced a few results and I opted for the kernel-image-2.6.5-1-386 but upon reflection I noticed that the kernel-image-2.6.5-1-686 is for "PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/PIV."

My computer is running a Celeron 2.4; was I wrong in choosing the 386 over the 686? I ask this because after updating Grub which gave me the choice of booting into my old kernel (2.4.19) or the new 2.6.5 (which of course I chose to see how things went) it seems that my XFree86 settings have been changed.

I tried a # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and entered all my usual settings but I can't login into my usual XWindows.

One thing that I think may be causing a problem is that just before I chose to install the new kernel it said that hotplug would be removed (I use a USB mouse by the way). Would this be causing my problems? I can't connect to the internet under the new kernel so I can't # apt-get install hotplug.

Any ideas of what may have gone wrong?

your celeron should be able to run a i686 compiled kernel.

The difference is, a kernel compiled for a 686, will not run on a 386 P classic processor,
but a 386 kernel will run on ANY processor thats x86.

The real difference is its compiled for that processor and is more efficient.

Thanks for replying, I didn't think I'd made the wrong choice.

I'm just googling trying to find out how to rectify my problem.

After racking my brain I decided to do an # apt-get install hotplug whilst I was running 2.4.19 and rebooted. To my delight I was able to boot into 2.6.5 and everything's running great! I just assumed that I'd need to install the hotplug whilst running 2.6.5. My mouse actually seems a lot more responsive now, as a matter of fact everything seems to be running quicker. Is this common after upgrading?
