Go to http://www.kernel.org
Download the version (the latest is 2.6.15+)
Decompress it.
1) Type make xconfig
Chosse the option to compile your kernel and save it.
2) Make bzImage
This will make the linux kernel, which will be loaded while booting.
3) Make modules
4) Make moudules-install
5) Make install.
The trick will be the make xconfig (menuconfig, etc..) step, and the selection of options chosen may have a lot more to do with "this problem," whatever it is, than the kernel version. Really depends upon the problem, whether there's a recently-closed bug report specifying this version as being a fix, and so on. Hope we hear more follow-up on this one.
