updating without reinstalling


i am running red hat 7.2
i don't have any way to download a newer version or distribution (my internet connection is the public library)
i am using gnome as my desktop

i want to download the newest version of the gimp
but it requires gtk+ 2.0
from what i understand
gnome is built on gtk
if i update gtk will i destroy
my gnome?
can i update this ?????

someone with knowledge have mercy on my stupidity
PLEASE!!!!

What is the point of asking here if you don't check for responses? Anyway, just in case anybody else is wondering about this, I'm fairly certain that GTK+ 1.x and GTK+ 2.x can be installed side-by-side.

EDIT: I looked further into it - they can be installed side-by-side and the GTK+ team intend to allow you to do the same thing for GTK+ 3.x
