updates on opensuse 10.3
i'm trying to update a new install of opensuse10.3, and it timesout after a few seconds and gives me this message:
please use add/remove update sources from the tray icon menu to define an update repositorywhich dosen't work either. please help translate in english? for dummies :) i'm assuming this same problem is preventing me from adding any community / software repositories. also, none of the '1-click installs' work too. they just take way too much time and then abort. i usually connect with a proxy on windows, but it works just fine here without - besides, keeps giving me error message when i add the proxy. |
It could be a couple things, but let's start with the basics. If you are using KDE, click on the K Menu (chameleon) --> Computer (tab) --> YaST.
Select the Software category on the left (if it is not already selected) and then click on the Community Repositories icon. Select Main Repository (NON-OSS), Main Repository (OSS), and Main Update Repository. If that does not help or misses the point, please clarify what you are seeing and what you need. |
hi,
thanks for getting back. yeah, im using kde ive tried that again, and it gives me this warning: 'unable to download list of repositories or no repository defined' it completely bypasses the selection process (at least i'm assuming there is one) says network is fine though (the first tick) the warning is new though. yesterday it just hung at 33% for hours. ----- UPDATE: i've disabled proxy now, so no more warning. just hangs |
OK. I just noticed yesterday on my 10.3 machine that SUSE issued a patch to fix some problem with YaST (or YaST Online Update--I forgot which). However, it did not install properly (it threw a warning error) and so I ignored it since I had other problems I had to deal with at the time and I wanted to use my computer as a computer, rather than research problems with SUSE.
In the meantime, does YaST work properly otherwise? If so, in the software section, try launching the Online Update Configuration by clicking on that button. This may allow you to set up the update, which in turn can update YaST so that it behaves itself. |
oh ok - hehe. this is the second clean install in less than 24 hours. maybe is should do something else ...
YAST only works as far as install stuff from the DVD iso. nothing else works, no online update nothing. been googling and it seems to be a common problem. no idea why though. will keep looking. thanks so much |
As a guess, you might be able to add them manually. Here is the procedure, which may work.
In YaST's Software section, click on the Software Repositories icon. Uncheck any boxes next to any repositories. Next, select Add, select HTTP, then click Next. To add the Main Repository (NON-OSS), type this into the Server Name field: Code:
download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3/repo/non-oss/ Code:
download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3/repo/oss/ Code:
download.opensuse.org/update/10.3/ |
hi,
thanks. tried that too, but didn't work. found this and hopefully it might. will be rebooting to find out. will let you know either way. |
didn't work either. can't even connect to proxy anymore - test fails. and i know the proxy is correct - hmmm
Code:
Error any clues what else it could be? right now im running on inexperience and 3 hours sleep in 2 days :) - and so far nothing but firefox, thunderbird and kopete connect to any network. |
I'm forced to post in the intro forum before answering here.

Ok, here's my message:
Here's something about the proxy and zypper issue: http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs_10.3 Anyways, i was looking for the problem with the 'unable to download list of repositories or no repository defined' error. I upgraded from 10.2 to 10.3 (by changing the repos and subsequently updating) |
still not working - i've given up for now. i can connect in my office directly, without a proxy - so i took it there and updated.
if i find a fix, ill post it here. |
