Update Gnome Desktop How Too?

Hi Everyone,
I finally got back to using linux again. I am currently running SuSe 9.0 pro. I notice that my Gnome desktop is 2.2x and the current is 2.4.x and I would like to update this. Is there a simple way to do this? If so can you provide a link to it and some instructions.
I also would like to put some wallpaper on my desktop but have not found any yet can some one show me a place I can do this. I know I can do it in KDE easy- but I am trying to learn Gnome.

In my experience the difference between Gnome 2.2 and 2.4 is slight and the risks involved in upgrading are large. You're looking at a lot of work with a significant risk that you'll end up with a broken system and have to reinstall SuSe.
