Unresponsive Logout Button KDE 3.4

Im using SuSE 9.3 with KDE 3.4. I put a log out button on the panel and when i press it, it either doesnt do anything and i have to press it again, OR the wallpaper goes black and it doesn't do anything for about a minute, then it finally logs out (or shuts down). Does anyone know how to fix this (i don't even know if it can be fixed)?
