unreadable fonts in some software menus

In some applications like gnucash, vuescan, xmms or bittorrent menues are displayed in almost unreadable small and pixellike fonts. My screen is a 17'' 1280x1024 pixel monitor, though. I tried the font controls in kde, but they only seem to influence the window system and not the menus within the application. Does anyone know, how to handle this problem without a magnifying lens ?

Thanks Michael

Those are gtk applications (non kde/qt) so changing kde fonts won't help. Try configuring each app individually or if you also have gnome change the settings using the fonts section of the gnome preferences.

Sorry, it took a while, since I've been out of town.
No, the menus (i tried with xmms) seem to have their own size and scaling, which can't be enlarged by neither kde nor gnome settings. But thanks for your suggestion.
