Unity 2D with Ubuntu 14.04?
 

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, and I select 2D at login, because it's too slow otherwise. I'm thinking of upgrading to 14.04, but... have found mixed results when googling the question - "is untiy 2D still possible with 14.04"?

Do any of you know? Is 2D still possible with 14.04?

I'm reluctant to upgrade, concerned that it will again be too slow if I can't run in 2D.

why don't you just install other DE like xfce4 that is well suited for older computers.

I don't know what that is, or if it would work with skype and the rest of the applications I use.

It will work with skype just fine.

So, in which order do I upgrade and install?

1. Upgrade to 14.04 ?
2. Install Linux Lite ?
3. Install XFCE4?

I'm not suggesting this is the best way to do it but the way I would do it is install XFCE, set it as my default desktop environment (DE), then upgrade Ubuntu.
With Linux installing and using another DE is usually as easy as just doing it.

Frustrating. I don't understand what any of you are saying. I'm just a common user, not a developer.
I installed XFCE4, and now there is a blank square in the upper left-hand corner I can't get rid of.

So... yes or no? Can 14.04 run in 2D?

I'll completely uninstall XFCE4. It doesn't help - makes more problems. But thanks for the suggestion.

I recently installed the Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade on two machines. At the log-on screen menu, 14.04 is offering only "Ubuntu (Default)". On a third machine still running 12.04, the log-on menu shows "Unity" and "Unity 2D". I guess I'm not clear on what to conclude from these observations -- I reverted to "Gnome (Metacity)" on both 14.04 machines.

U can run til KDE with 2 gb of RAM !!!

Don't give up so easily. You don't have to be a developer or computer wiz to do this just have some patience and do things slowly and methodically explaining any problems you have.
Where does this blank square appear? If it is on your Unity desktop then, since you wouldn't be using that after changing to XFCE it can safely be ignored. If you have XFCE installed you can log out and, on the login screen, choose to log into XFCE and you're done.

From memory, I am happy to be corrected if I am wrong, Canonical dropped Unity 2D about 12.10.

The blank box was with the XFCE4.

Going to try Linux-Lite.
