no nothing happened for root just...
dyna180-62:~ # xhost localhost
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

xhost: unable to open display ":0.0"

and normal shell

078625d@dyna180-62:~> xhost localhost
localhost being added to access control list
078625d@dyna180-62:~> firefox
/usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin: symbol lookup error: /opt/gnome/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: gdk_screen_set_resolution_libgtk_only

same deal.
Have you ever seen anything like this before?
I am totally stumped.

hi guys,

I had similar trouble with starting X after the recent update of xorg.
I did an upgrade of Suse 10 to 10.1 a while ago.
Already i had trouble with X rights, namely when starting yast i got a request for password, after which Yast did not start.
Then, when doing xhost + all went well.

Things got worse after the upgrade, i could not start x at all.
I went trouble shooting as root in init 3, seeing that when starting X i got output connection refused to local host.

I found by googling that somebody had a similar problem and he was advised to remove .Xauthority for that user.
Well, I found that file under /root and removed it.
My normal user did not have one.
After doing startx it worked as root and after a reboot the normal user logged in as well .
Also the trouble with yast is fixed .

seems like a bug in the upgrade..

hope this helps anyone!
