Angry Unable to mount proc on boot - RH8

I have since moved to FC3 but problem was caused when proc failed to mount during sysinit.

I was unable to determine what caused the fault.
Hard drive was/is ok and I have been able to copy all data from it.

So far the only hint I've received is that some of the *mod files must have been changed or damaged such that they are no longer compatible with the kernel.
The subject is only of historic interest now but I'de like to get a real answer because it's bound to jump up and bite me or someone else again

Make sure you have /proc support (built-in) in the kernel or it will never mount.

Its best to upgrade cleanly instead of upgrading on top of the old installation.

unfortunatly problem didn't happen as part of an upgrade more as 'Oh the server is down, try a restart'.
I agree with you on full clean installs.
