unable to log into gnome after installing progs with automatix

hey, after installing some programs with Automatix on ubuntu 5.10, I got a problem. I can't log in to gnome anymore with a normal user. as root I'm still able to do this (in recovery mode)
this is the xsession-error I get:

[CODE]/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/X11/sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/lib/gdm/:1.Xservers" -h "" -l ":1" "benjamin"
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...

/CODE]

the programs I installed:
Code:
Ctrl-Alt-Del|DVD Ripper|Numlock ON|NVIDIA cards|Firestarter|AUD-DVD codecs
I first thougth the nvidia drivers were to blame, but the installer said that in the rare case X should crash, I had to replace the xorg.conf with the backup
so I replaced the file, but nothing changed
also google is not really helpful

I'ld really appreciate the help

When this problem occurred to me, I SSHed into my server and did an ls -la on my home folder.

I noticed that the .ICEAuthority file was owned by root for some reason (it should be owned by my username), so i did:

chown myusername:myusername .ICEAuthority

I was then able to log in properly.

I hope this helps someone.
