Unable to install VLC media player or any other player in SL 6.3 distro
 
Hi,

I am unable to install VLC or any other media players in my SL 6.3 distro. I am using yum utility to install the packages, but i am getting the below error messages

 You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
 You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
I think it is missing some rpms do i need to manually download the rpms for yum installation. Even i have tried with 'Add/Remove Software' package manager getting the same error for VLC and M Player. Please help.

Welcome to the forums! You are using the wrong rpmfusion repo. "rawhide" is Fedora's testing branch, definitely not compatible with SL. Remove the rawhide repo and carefully follow the "RPM Fusion for RHEL 6 or compatible like CentOS" instructions here to add the correct repo: http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration

ScientificLinux 6 is not a great choice for running VLC

the vlc web site( the RHEL page)
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-redhat.html
has 0.99 for rhel5

however it is in RPMforge repo

install yum-priorities plugin
install the rpmforge repo
CONFIGURE!!!!!! yum-priorities and give rpmforge a highte numbor that sl-repo

rpmfogre can AND will replace critical system files with DIFFERENT versions than are in "sl-update"

then

yum search vlc
--- from the list --
yum install vlc
but be warned !!!!
navagating the repo mine field in incompatible repos to get multimedia running on RHEL/Cent/SL is very difficult

ScientificLinux dose NOT do much documentation
it assumes that you ARE familiar with administrating a RHEL system

YOU will have to port the Centwiki and the red hat docs FOR USE in SL6
