Unable to install VLC Media player on FC3

Hello Experts,

I downloaded VLC.tar.gz file which has the whole set of rpm's required for installing VLC Media Player.

I did the following ......but lot of dependency problems.....plz help out.

just use yum.
go to fedorafaq.org, download the yum.conf file, place it in /etc/yum.conf, then just do something like:

su
[root pass]
yum install vlc // (or videolan)

I got the yum.conf file and did the yum install but I still get this:

Error: Missing Dependency: libdvbpsi.so.1 is needed by package vlc
Error: Missing Dependency: libcdio.so.3(CDIO_3) is needed by package libcddb
Error: Missing Dependency: libcdio.so.3 is needed by package libcddb

ps - that yum.conf file has been quite handy.

I'm a yum newbie with a similar problem, except after yum install vlc/* it comes up with missing dependencies for libiso9660.so.2, libcdio.so.0, and libiso9660.so.0.

I have added all the repositories I can find, and updated yum. Neither have helped. I've installed libcdio-0.70, which I believed have all these in. I've run locate on the files and definitely have the former two, however I can't find a command in the yum manual page to allow me to force yum to look in these places.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

[edit] After discussion with friends, decided my linux was messed up and reinstalled and all was fine,

can anybody please help me out as well. I am also having similar kind of problem when installing VLC media player under my RedHat Fedora Core 4. After reading all the posts under this topic i tried to install VLC using yum in the following way:

i dont understand where i am doing wrong. Following are the contents of my /etc/yum.conf

I have experienced similar dependeny problems with the VLC media player. Although I am using Scientific Linux, I assume the results are similar on Fedora. While looking at the Red Hat packages at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-redhat.html I noticed it recommends adding "--nodeps" to the command line, and this got the Fedora package working on my system.

hello experts

i am very newbie in linux and using fedora core 2
i try to installed vlc player and find same problem that was asked previously i copy the missing library and run command

yum install vlc
it was successfully run but after some time on shell the cursor was only blinking i wait for some time but there was nothing is there anything i must do to install it

If you have an RPM for VLC, try the following command as suggested by the videolan website:

rpm -U vlc/* --force

If you get dependency issues, try:

rpm -U vlc/* --force --nodeps

which will not do a dependency check before installing/upgrading the package.

i tried this
rpm -U vlc/* --force --nodeps it has been installed vlc but still there is a problem it,s not openning any video file or itself when i clicked vlc icon on my sound&card menu for some times it shows busy icon and then terminates i also tried it in command prompt but doesn,t work it shows error as

[root@localhost good]# vlc --help
vlc: error while loading shared libraries: libhal.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[root@localhost good]# vlc 5.mpg
vlc: error while loading shared libraries: libhal.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[root@localhost good]#

i also try to find libhal.so.0: but i couldn,t find anywhere please help me

I recently upgraded to Fedora Core 4. I wanted to get VLC running so did the following.

I visited http://www.videolan.org/, and subsequently found the "download fedora code" page at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-fedora.html

From there I navigated to http://rpm.livna.org/configuration.html and, as instructed, ran the following from my command line (as user root):

Code:

rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/4/i386/R...2.4.noarch.rpm

Next, I made sure I had the extras repository installed (as instructed) by going to http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Extras/UsingExtras to make sure I'd done the right thing.

Finally I ran

Code:

yum install vlc

But this gave me the error that everyone talks about:

Code:

Error: Missing Dependency: libdvbpsi.so.1 is needed by package vlc

So I installed libdvbpsi using yum, which installs libdvbpsi.so.3, and even symlinking this to libdvbpsi.so.1 doesn't bypass yum's check.

So I erased fedora core 4 version libdvbpsi with

Code:

rpm --erase -v libdvbpsi

Then I downloaded a fedora core 3 version of libdvbpsi and installed using rpm. I downloaded this from ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/rpm.livna...n.4.3.i386.rpm

Code:

rpm --install -v libdvbpsi-0.1.3-0.lvn.4.3.i386.rpm

Then reran

Code:

yum install vlc

Success! It installs now! And runs!! On fedora core 4!!

Hi Everyone,

Here's what I had to do:

I followed the previous post and:

rpm --erase -v libdvbpsi

Then I downloaded libdvbpsi and installed it:

rpm --install -v libdvbpsi-0.1.3-0.lvn.4.3.i386.rpm

But yum was still giving me errors:

Code:

Error: Missing Dependency: libcdio.so.5(CDIO_5) is needed by package vlc
Error: Missing Dependency: libcdio.so.5 is needed by package vlc

I had to download http://gnu.mirrors.tds.net/pub/fedor....73-1.i386.rpm and install it.

Code:

rpm -ivh --force libcdio-0.73-1.i386.rpm

Now yum would install, but I got this error when running vlc:

Code:

vlc: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libavcodec.so: undefined symbol: faacDecOpen

I found that libavcodec.so was part of ffmpeg so I downloaded it from http://apt.sw.be/packages/ffmpeg/ffm...c3.rf.i386.rpm

And installed it with:

Code:

rpm -ivh ffmpeg-0.4.9-0.20041110.3.1.fc3.rf.i386.rpm

And Thank God it's finally working!
