Unable To Install Alsamixer ???

I'm using Redhat 9.0 kernel 2.4.20-24.9 and try to use Synaptic. It shows that it is loaded, but when I try to launch I get a small window showing GNOME ALSA Mixer with a file and help. It does nothing. Any ideas ?

Is Alsa working correctly? Are you using Alsa drivers for your sound card? Do you have read+write access to /dev/mixer and /dev/dsp?

I have installed alsa module through Synaptic. Don,t know how to get it going and how to disable default. I went to the alsa site and tried to read the instructions, but they are poorly written ( extremely poorly written. ) How do I determine if I have permission?
