Unable to find ncurses libraries!

When I tried to do a make menuconfig I got this errorabout ncurses:

rm -f include/asm
( cd include ; ln -sf asm-i386 asm)
make -C scripts/lxdialog all
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/scripts/lxdialog'
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lncurses
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

>> Unable to find the Ncurses libraries.
>>
>> You must have Ncurses installed in order
>> to use 'make menuconfig'

make[1]: *** [ncurses] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/scripts/lxdialog'
make: *** [menuconfig] Error 2

Although when I do: rpm -qa | grep ncurses ,
ncurses-5.2-12

shows up.

I'm just baffled.

Did you run this a root? Or your user account?

I tried it as root and a normal user. I'm really confused because I've never seen this before and so many programs rely on ncurses.

Do you have a development package installed, ncurses-devel?
And obviously you don't, so go straight to rpmfind.net to get it make sure the version for ncurses-devel is the same as for ncurses.

Of course it does, the development package contains header files for ncurses which are needed for
make menuconfig

I also need the ncurses-devel package. However, I need ncurses-devel-5.2-23mdk.i686 for Mandrake 8.2. The closes rpm's I can find are ncurses-devel-5.2-12.1mdk.i586.rpm and ncurses-devel-5.2-12.2mdk.i586.rpm.

Well, wadda ya know! I needed libncurses-devel, not ncurses-devel. Very confusing when your being told you need ncurses-devel. Ah, well....

I have both ncurses and ncurses-devel installed and make menuconfig still gives me this error:

/bin/sh: cc: command not found

>> Unable to find the Ncurses libraries.
>>
>> You must have Ncurses installed in order
>> to use 'make menuconfig'

make[1]: *** [ncurses] Error 1

Please help

Hello kovuru,

unfortunately You didnt tell about installing the libncurses-dev package. Can You please clarify if You have it installed?

Additionaly You should install the gcc package. It will install the cc and the gcc command ( and much more ), which seems to be missed.
