Unable to Change root or any user password in RHEL.5.4


I have RHEL machine in which I am unable to change root or any other user password, its giving below error -


[root@POS01828A etc]# passwd root
Changing password for user root.
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error


Please advise.

this is redhat , so you do have the required support contract ?
right?
also 5.4 is 6 versions and 3 years out of date the current in the older legacy 5 series is RHEL 5.10

have you done a search of the redhat knowledgebase ?

you will need to login to redhat web site with the credentials you set up with the license

This is a known issue, and has been covered (with a solution), on the Red Hat forums:

...which you have access to, since you're paying for RHEL. You also need to check the /etc/shadow and /etc/passwd files, making sure they exist, and what permissions they have. Also, read the man page on the pwconv command.
