Unable to access CDs

Hi...

I have been facing this problem since last 3 days...

I have a dual boot of Win98se and RedHat 9. My Creative 48X CDROM drive was working fine till 4 days back...but suddenly, it has stopped reading CDs...both in Windows and Linux...

I opened the cabinet and took off the cables connecting CDROM and again connected them back. After that, when i switched on the machine, it started reading the CD again. After few hours, I shut down the machine. When next morning, I opened it, the same problem occured....This time even taking off and putting back of the cables didnt work....

I dont know what is the problem....The drive is being detected during startup...that means there are no loose connections...

Any pointers guys?

Regards,

amit

umm....it sounds like a hardware problem to me, especially as the same thing happens in both linux and windows. have you tried *changing* the IDE cable, and also [if poss] moving _just_ the cdrom drive to another computer?

Well, this is my home pc....and I dont have anyone near my home, where I can take my drive and check it....At the most I will have to take it to some hardware shop...which I dont wanna do...I would first like to deal with it at my level.....

The second thing is, if there was some hardware problem, the drive itself would not have been detected....I dont have much hardware knowledge...so I cant say for sure.....

I would like to try everything possible before I take my box to a repair shop....(as it will cost me bucks)....What can be the possible causes of this problem? any ideas?

Regards,

amit

Actually if there is a hardware problem it's very likely that it gets detected.
It's happened before to me while running various servers and desktops. HDDs that don't work but get detected, and CD-Roms that do the same aren't that uncommon.

Well.....Ok....I have few questions arising at this point

1. If this is a hardware problem, what can I do at my end to sort it out...?

2. Is it the case that my CDROM drive has become useless?? Will I have to buy a new drive now??? ( I dont wana do that....strapped for cash right now :( )

I would like answers to these questions, before I shut down the system and open the box...:(

amit

I took off the cables and disconnected the drive...I also disconnected it from the Secondary Master bus. However, even after that, it displays "Device not ready" error in Win98.

any clues guys..whats wrong with my CD drive??

amit
