ubuntu trusty software updater problem.

Hi,

I am using ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) on my desktop. Usually I always keep the software upto date with the in built software updater. However this time when I tried to update, the software updater itself closes (probably crahes).

this is the error from the syslog.

pingu@zi0n$ tail -f /var/log/syslog

Hi...

I'm wondering if it would help if you tried opening the update manager via the terminal and posted whatever error messages came up there...

Code:
update-manager
Thanks!

Hi,

When I run update-manager from a terminal/console window ,it simply closes, no output.
Also I think, because of the last update, the network connections are slow and take a bit longer to connect/initialize.
Im sure this is an ubuntu issue since this does not happen when I boot from Slackware (dual-boot machine).

Just to confirm the problem, is it possible to rollback the last update(s) ?

This is why I prefer to use apt-get or aptitude rather than an update manager. I'd suggest you open a terminal and type these two commands:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
If things go wrong at least you should get some messages about what the problem is.

Hi,

Thanks.
Yes, "sudo apt-get upgrade" solved the problem.

After I updated the system it gave me a message :
The following packages have been kept back:
linux-headers-generic
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

So I ran "sudo apt-get upgrade linux-headers-generic"
and that solved the issue completely.
All said and done, your suggestion is better , check for updates via gui and update your system via cli.

so thanks a lot again.

Cheers.
