Ubuntu Slow

I understand Ubuntu's a brand new distro, but I was hoping someone might be able to help me out, since I'm not very farmiliar with Debian-based distros.

When I log into the system, it takes at least 30 minutes for Gnome to fully load, and once it's loaded, if i enter nautilus, at least half a minute goes by before the action i selected takes place.

I've tried reformatting, changing file systems, and not updating packages online,

However, the first time I installed it, over a Slackware10, it worked.

Any ideas?

That does indeed sound awfully strange. I have been a Debian user for years, but the last year and a half I've been using Gentoo quite a lot. Got bored, installed Ubuntu and found it does exactly what I want (a Debian for the modern desktop!).

A good place to start looking for weird behaviour is your logs. Type dmesg | less to browse the dmesg info (in less, up and down arrow keys to move, pressing Q quits). The first few pages are bound to be kernel startup messages but if there are any error messages, especially repeated ones, they may be important. Also have a look in /var/log/syslog, /var/log/messages and /var/log/debug.
