I just installed ubuntu on my desktop and wheneve ri login i see the mouse curser and thats it, it never gets any further. Ive installed ubuntu on this computer before with no problems, it also does this when i use the live cd. Also when i choose failsafe gnome or failsafe term from the session box at the login menu it hangs right there and i have to reboot, does anyone know whats going on with this.
Not sure how much help I'll be in figuring this out, but I have a couple thoughts on how to get more info on what's wrong. If you can get to boot in the terminal mode, maybe try startx and see if it gives any kind of message. Also maybe try installing some environment other than Gnome, like IceWm or fluxbox and see if the same thing happens. If so then it's most likely a problem with X, if not then a Gnome problem.
Probably not worth it if you installed Dapper, but in case anyone comes across this, you could use a liveCD and edit the inittab file, or I think there's an option in grub to boot to a different runlevel, but I don't remember what it is right now. But glad that you got Dapper working. I use Arch mostly now, but I'll probably upgrade anyway just to see how the new version is working.
