Ubuntu desktop wrong place

I installed Ubuntu from a CD. The desktop comes up two inches to the left
also it is slightly too big

Are you using an LCD or a CRT? You probably just need to adjust your monitor settings or your refresh rate in System>Administration>Screens and Graphics.
