Question Ubuntu- Console log in on boot, password not taken

A rather self explanatory issue. I had someone install Ubuntu on my laptop while i was busy. They set a password in account information under settings, and wrote it down. It installed to the disk successfully, but when i try to start it off the Hard Drive, it opens in console, which i expected, asks for a username and password. I give it Root, and the password i was provided, but it says Login Incorrect. Is there some sort of default password that the installer uses? I know Liveuser and cheese has been used before on Fedora.
