ubuntu cd stuck on loading desktop

I am trying to put ubuntu on a computer that already has windows on it. I know how to set up the install for dual boot, the problem is that when i put in the iso i burned, it boots up, but when i hit enter to 'start or install ubuntu', it works all the way up until i get the peach colored background and the mouse pointer loads. From there, it freezes and will not finish loading. I have tried to do a graphics safe boot and everything else. I got the same cd to work correctly on another computer (also with windows already installed), so what could be different about this one that it won't finish loading the desktop?

Something hardware-related, maybe; I experienced that with some Ubuntu versions too, which I verified to be ok with other PCs. I didn't have time to fix it then, so I just burned an Alternate Install Disc and used that (did a non-grahpical installation). After that X and the desktop came up without problems.

You could try to alter the kernel options before booting, and pass some parameters to disable certain things to see if it helps (like noacpi option helps some people); the problem is, you should know a bit what is wrong before going blind-shooting. How about pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 or F2, are there any error messages visible?
