Ubuntu audio

Hello,

I have recently installed Ubuntu linux and for some reason, there is no sound and the computer can't seem to find alsaconf, and when i try to install it, it claims that an updated version is already installed called "alsa-utils' but that won't work either.

I have already tried muting and/or un-muting various options in volume control and alsamixer.

if anyone can help, it would be very much appreciated.

Did you run alsamixer with the root terminal? If you do get sound to work, don't forget to run alsactl store
and delete those fsck*ng annoying noises from /usr/share/sounds/gtk-events

Or you could just turn those fucking annoying noises off in the Computer menu on your desktop? That's what I did.

Yes, i have tried to run alsamixer while in root terminal. it gives me the same options as in regular terminal so i still can't make any progress there. The place where i can get the most options is in "volume control" from there i can contriol the volume of the static coming from my speakers. I would actually be thankful if i could even hear annoying sounds, at leasty that would assure me that all is working properly.

I think that the problem can be solved if only i could run alsa-utils. does anyone know how to properly run it?
