Ubuntu 8.04 as guest to Win 7 RC1, resolution locked at 800x600
Hey everyone, how's it going?
I've been at Overclock.net for some time now, and I've only dabbled into the Linux scene (I'm a gamer, I need my windows) I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 in a VM with Windows 7 RC1 as the host OS. The only problem I'm having is the fact that I can't get Ubuntu to run at a higher resolution, even 1024x768 would be nice. My native resolution is 1440x900, and I have an nvidia 8800GT. Here is what it looks like now. http://i46.tinypic.com/2hxspr8.jpg Any help or tips in general for life in a VM would be great! Thanks. |
What are you using for VM software? VirtualBox? Virtual PC? VMWare?
|
Oh, right.
I'm using Virtual Box...Also, before I start the virtual machine, in the settings tab, I've tried enabling 2D and 3D video, but neither have any effect. |
Have you installed VirtualBox Guest Additions in the guest?
|
I did, and it's running almost at my native res (it's in a window, so there's a little room lost) but I'm fine with that. The only thing that I still can't enable are desktop effects.
For reference, I used this guide. http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/v...st-addons.html |
Press Right-ctl+F to get it full screen, same as desktop res.
Even cooler yet, click Machine->Seemless mode to integrate Ubuntu windows with Windows windows. |

AWESOME! Thanks to both of you! |
No probs! Glad we could help. It's possible to tweak VB settings to get desktop effects to perform for you, but I haven't bothered much with it. When the VM is powered off, open VB, highlight your VM, and click on 'Display' on the right panel. This will open a dialogue box, and you can click a radio button to enable the 3D graphics capabilities of the host for the guest. Not sure how good it is though!
