Unhappy Ubuntu 6.10 alternate+PCMCIA+Desktop

Hallo all,
I have installed Ubuntu alternate 6.10 on my old notebook Toshiba Tecra 8000. However after restart, there is no desktop or network connection. Is it normal?

I'm trying to access internet thru my D-Link DFE-670TXD which is inserted in a PCMCIA slot. After a couple of attempts, I failed. The light on the card is still off! According to ifconfig -a, Hardware Adresse is made up of 0. Does it mean that the laptop doesn't figure out the card at all? Besides, in /etc/pcmcia/config.opts there is on information on any card, but include port and include memory.

How could I put it straight? Any recommendation and tips are highly appreciated.
