Two questions about XMMS

1. How do I get it to play Audio CDs?

2. How do I get it to play Video Clips (such as MPEG and AVI files encoded with Divx*)?

*=if possible

I am using Slackware 8.1

you can play audio cd's provided that you have mounted it
for divx you need a divx viewer
here is a site
http://www.divx.com/divx/linux/

Hmm, how do you mount the Cd Drive with an Audio CD in it? I've read that it is not possible since Audio CDs don't have a real FS on them.

I can play Divx with MPlayer, but I'd like to control Mplayer from a program like XMMS.

sorry!!!!!
well of course you cannot mount a audio cd
but xmms has cdrom plugin(see in preferences if your system has it)
read /usr/share/doc/xmms-(version)/README for more

Wow I got it to work, for CD Audio that is. /dev/cdrom didn't have the correct permissions.

But when I try to open the CD audio, it takes a long @$$ time to open them, would that because of the CDDB?

EDIT: 1 question down, 1 to go.

I installed the Divx plugin, the AVI plugin and the avifile stuff. And it still doesn't work (right). I get a blank video screen that plays nothing.

I believe you would also need the smpeg plugin for MPEG playback, also supports vcd format. But I personally don't use xmms to watch movies or video clips, I would think after adding your plugins, you would need to reconfigure/reinstall xmms so it detects these plugins so they can be used.

But why not use mplayer, everyone knows its the best movieplayer/video player..

Because I don't know how to get a Mplayer GUI (stop, pause, play, etc) buttons to control the clip.

I already installed the smpeg plugin.

? Assuming you are running gmplayer then they are quite obvious from their symbols...

Not sure what you mean?

Cool
