I am having 2 problems with Gentoo Linux. I ran a stage 3 install. That was succesful. However, I have 2 problems.
1) Whenever I reboot, there is a message about dhcpcd already running, and if not delete /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.pid, or some file along the lines of that anyway. I delete it, and it keeps coming back. Anything I can do to fix this?
2)I accidentily installed 2 system loggers. How would I go about removing one?
can only help you on # 1 , and not too much on that either..
The message you described comes into action when dhcpcd (the prog that configures your net from the dhcp server) is allready running when it is activated.. Now, I dont know much about the init process of gentoo, but I doubt any distro would have it done twice out of the stock.. Any modifications youve done concerning dhcp / net access is the most likely cause.. Anyways.. The pid file it tells about exists to stop the dhcpcd from being started twice, and ensures an easy killage for it, so _dont_ remove it.. It isnt much of a catastrophe if you remove it, but better leave it where it is unless you kill dhcpcd yourself.. (; But no danger realy in starting it twice as long as you have the pid file intact that stops the bogy
Well, in that case id recommend finding the init stuff that make the first attempt at dhcpcd and fix that, or if it seems to be allright, make sure it is started after networking is online, if not, then delay it..
I have gentoo myself, and the init script loads stuff from /etc/init.d, in contrary to other distro's, which use /etc/rc.d if I'm right (Debian for example)
You can change things with:
/sbin/rc-update (must be root).
To show what is started at init:
/sbin/rc-update -s
For me, a nice table shows up, for example showing
sysklogd | default
Which means sysklogd (logger) is started at the default runlevel. It also shows dhcpd.
To disable something from starting up, for example sysklogd:
rc-update del sysklogd default
To add something:
rc-update add sysklogd default.
So, to disable dhcpd from starting up:
rc-update del dhcpd default.
That's all I know.
Don't forget man rc-update and rc-update --help could be a great help.
Good luck!
Well, =I apologize for the long-ass gap in replies. But using Links or Lynx really is a true pain in the ass, considering I cannot even read half of what is being said.
Anyways, When I run rc-update -s, bot the loggers show up , but only one of them ( I forget which) has tags on it. I'll check out the dhcpcd thing when I get back ho,e as it is kinda hard to reach my keyboard from school.
