Two Compilers Installed - What Command to Use?

Hello forum,

This is probably an age old question, but what would I type in the terminal window to tell it which compiler to use to compile an unzipped tarball, assuming I have two compilers with different version numbers? I am trying to make it use the lower version, gcc3.3 but it always uses the higher version (gcc-4.0.1-5) by default. I am trying to compile the latest version of Mplayer but I get a message saying I need to use the lower version, gcc3.3, for best results.

I am able to only get this far:

[root@localhost MPlayer-1.0pre7try2]# gcc-$(gcc3.3-version)
gcc-3.3.6: no input files
[root@localhost MPlayer-1.0pre7try2]#

Am I on the right track so far?

Thanks,
Roy

you can try to set an env variable CC, that's what should be used when issuing make
if the name of compiler is gcc-3.3, try this:

export CC=gcc-3.3
make
