TweetDeck in Xubuntu - runs, but blank and unresponsive

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi all

I've installed Adobe Air and TweetDeck on my Dell Vostro 1700 laptop, running Xubuntu 8.10.

Both installations apparently completed without problems, and TweetDeck boots OK, but then sits on the screen, blank apart from the button bar, and is unresponsive to anything other than a click on the log out button, which closes the app.

If anyone can advise on possible solutions I'd be most grateful - anything but go back to the Twitter web interface!

Many thanks,

Adrian.

you mean this? http://www.tweetdeck.com/beta/

looks to me like the program is still in beta, so i wouldn't be entirely surprised that there are a few bugs or glitches, perhaps a screenshot with more information on how you installed it?

Installation and screenshot

I've attached a screenshot of TweetDeck as it appears on my machine.

Mousing over the various buttons at the top of the window produces appropriate tooltips, but they are all unresponsive to clicks, apart from the logout button at top right, which closes the app down.

I would expect it to ask me to provide my Twitter login details, on first run, at any rate, and then populate the window with tweets.

As far as install is concerned, I first installed Adobe Air, by downloading the .bin file from http://get.adobe.com/air/ and stuck it in my home folder.

I then made the .bin file executable, and ran it, following the instructions in the dialogue it threw up to complete the Air installation.

Next I downloaded the TweetDeck .air file from http://www.tweetdeck.com/beta/TweetDeck_0_22.air and in Thunar File Manager right clicked it and selected Open with Adobe Air Application Installer.

Again, I followed the dialogue, and it said that the installation had completed successfully.

On launching TweetDeck, though, I got what you can see in the screenshot.

All advice most gratefully received!

Thanks,

Adrian

hmm, still kinda vague, see if you can't open a terminal and run tweetdeck from the prompt (usually just typing tweetdeck or TweetDeck or something like that would work, it's case senstive though)

opening gui programs from a terminal sometimes produces output in that terminal that can be used for diagnosing problems, if not by default try tweetdeck --help to see if there is a verbose option to turn on, then look for errors being dumped into the terminal

Aha!

Running it from the terminal produced this message, in the terminal:

Unknown desktop manager, only Gnome and KDE are supported

Xubuntu runs Xfce, of course, not Gnome or KDE.

That'll be it then.

Many thanks for your help - very much appreciated.

Dont just jump to the conclusion. Adobe AIR is designed to run platform independent *.air applications. Its not running on xfce because it depends on gnome-keyring or kwallet (KDE).
So just run one of these and try again installing TweetDeck.

Thanks for the insight, rakris - that's worth knowing.

For the moment, though, all is well. I got things working by loading gnome-core over the top of xubuntu. This gives me a functioning TweetDeck and also a functioning Skype. Of course, it also gives me the Gnome desktop, which I prefer over Xfce - I originally went to Xubuntu because I couldn't get Skype to coexist with Ubuntu 8.10, apparently because of PulseAudio.

It's all working now so I'm reluctant to fiddle further!

TweetDeck in IceWM - runs, but blank and unresponsive

Hey.

I get the same reaction from TweetDeck but with IceWM.

I was wondering if anyone knew anything more on this?

Thanks!

Code:
$ GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID="whatever" /opt/TweetDeck/bin/TweetDeck
You can call it like this from console, or maybe change your launcher in /usr/share/applications/tweetdeck... to call it with the env variable setted.

"If you can beat them... lie them??" :P
