Turn off desktop icons for mounted drives

Whenever I put a disk in my drive or plug in a USB card, an icon appears on the GNOME desktop for this device. I prefer using a the Disk Mounter panel applet for opening and ejecting disks, because it is more easily accessible and the desktop icon placement algorithms never seem to put the desktop drive icons in a good place. How can I turn off the arrival of this desktop icon so that is doesn't appear when drives are mounted?

If you have gconf-editor installed, from Applications -> System Tools -> Configuration Editor, go to Apps -> Nautilus -> Desktop and uncheck the "Volumes visible" box. I have not a Gnome desktop at hand, but I am almost sure this is the way to do.
