The system is probably writing to a log file. If you have configured the network firewall software then it will write frequently to a log file if your network is busy.

You didn't mention whether you are using KDE, Gnome or something else. If KDE, there are one or two media daemons that poll IDE to see if media has been inserted. If you have a Lian Li like me or gamer case with a large hdd led it will drive you quite mad at eye level. Otherwise, there is no performance hit and there is no real disk writing going on. Yuu can try disabling the daemons but I found problems in newer versions of KDE when I do that so just suffer with it. YMMV
