trying to load mplayer

I’m afraid this is a newbie question
I installed fedora 4 as my OS
now I'm trying to install mplayer so I can watch DVD and video files

have the mplayer file
mplayer-1.0pre7try2-2.i386.rpm

and the codex file
mplayer-codecs-20050412-1.i386.rpm

when I try to run the file I get told I need
Libmp3Lame.so.0 as a needed dependency

so I tried running
lame-3.96.1-2.1.fc3.fr.src.rpm
which I think? Is the necessary file

I get told that this is a
source RPM which cannot be installed with system-config-packages.

Not sure what to do next?
too many new things at once

You need the compiled package (lame-3.96.1-2.1.fc3.fr.rpm) and not the source package as you are trying (lame-3.96.1-2.1.fc3.fr.src.rpm) to use. Just be patient, I know there are more libraries you need to install. Just follow what packages you need to install. Available at freshrpms (http://stentz.freshrpms.net/) most of the libraries and packages you need to install.

thank you
that was most helpful
I now have mplayer loaded
i went thru the files and found the executable and put it on the desktop

now I can't get it to play
nor does it list on the applications pull down
the system tells me it is loaded
how do I start it?

I am having a similar problem. I have Mplayer installed using Yumex. I saw no discernible errors. I have command line "mplayer" functionality, but no "gmplayer" functionality.
I am not sure where I need to look next.
I have the "Mplayer-Fedora Guide" white paper by M. Miranda, but fear really “pooching” the system.
Suggestions?

Did you also install mplayergui? If not, you can run mplayer on the console. Command is:

mplayer vcd://<trackno>
mplayer dvd://<trackno>

Type mplayer --help to view other options.

You also need to install mplayergui to enable the gmplayer.

that should be "mplayer-gui"

LinuxLala 11-22-2005 04:00 AM

mplayer is a command line program. If you need to run the graphical version, you need to install mplayer-gui and then run GMPLAYER

I thank everyone.
I am now doing a search for "mplayer-gui". It seems the "repos" are down today. So I am going to have to do some searching.
My scheduled stops are:
Freshrpms
Livna
Dar Weirs
Any other suggestions are welcome.
Again... Thanks

Okay, the end of the tail.
I used "yum install mplayer-gui" and this time it went for it. I believe that between "sirkware" and "spoon" , I got the good spelling and the right places to look.
It appears to complete. I will now go to the task of configuring.
Again... many thanks people.

still eluding me
using fedora4
the machince tells me I have mplayer installed
mplayer-1.0pre7try2-2.i386.rpm

tried to load the gui
mplayer-gui-1.0-0.lvn.0.28.pre7try2.4.i386.rpm

it won't load because the machine tells me I need mplayer first?
baffled?

is this a version conflict problem?

I Have seen another site that tells me I need a font and a skin to run the gui
so I got
/font-arial-iso-8859-1.tar.bz2
and
/Blue-1.4.tar.bz2
both from mplayerhq.hu

can't get either one to run

any suggestions??

sirkware 11-22-2005 10:51 PM

You can uninstall your mplayer first. Then download at mplayerhq.hu all the mplayer related files (mplayer, skin, fonts, for video cards, mplayer-gui, codecs, etc). Follow the steps outlined below the download page at mplayerhq.hu (http://rpm.greysector.net/mplayer/do...-optional.html)

BCBruce 11-23-2005 09:56 PM

continuing to be lead around in circles
the preference add /remove packages does not list mplayer
the rpm command for uninstall insists I have to be root to do the uninstall
trick is I'm logged in as root
is there more than one root?

can not install mplayer and mplayer-gui at the same time with yum
it clains it can not find the files
put them in home file
made sure the command line was set to home file
yum still could not see them

I think I have all the other filed loaded but mplayer and mplaer-gui have a circular dipendency and I can't seem to get around it??

sirkware 11-23-2005 11:20 PM

Can you post a screenshot of the errors you are getting as well as the commands you are doing? I just dowloaded the mplayer rpms on their website and followed the steps outlined on their site, installed any library dependencies and everything worked ok.

breezewax 11-26-2005 08:33 PM

I've just compiled and installed mplayer and it seems to work fine from the command line. When I run "gmplayer", it appears to start loading, then fails with

Code:

vo: X11 running at 1024x768 with depth 24 and 32 bpp (":0" => local display)
[skin] file ( /usr/local/programs/mplayer/share/mplayer/Skin/default/skin ) not found.
Skin not found (default).

I'm wondering if installing mplayer-gui will fix this but I cannot for the life of me find a download link for it on mplayerhq.hu. Any help?
