ATI: trying to load fglrx debian etch operation not permitted

Hi guys,

I'm trying to install my fglrx driver for my ATI Radeon 9500 card on debian etch with a kernel 2.6.18 which I compiled myself as an experiment (to see how newb i was). I didn't change many of the settings from the default debian .config just the clock speed (100Hz) etc. Anyway when i shutdown gdm and do rmmod radeon and then modprobe fglrx. It won't load fglrx. I think this is because I have a framebuffered console running from radeonfb. If I try to unload radeonfb from the fb console it won't let me cos it says its in use.

I've tried starting the kernel with vga=normal but radeonfb ends up getting loaded eventually anyway. Is there a way i can get around this safely? I hope i've provided all the info you need but if i haven't sorry in advance.

Marc

FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/module/2.6.18-custom/misc/fglrx.ko ) operation not permitted

I was going to delete this post because i've fixed the problem but then i thought I'd keep it for some other newb to look at if they have the same problem. (or if I forget)

I fixed the prob by doing:

Code:
Ctrl+Alt+F1
log in as root
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
rmmod radeon
rmmod drm
modprobe -v fglrx

Hope it helps! I had to read a post in german to understand that!
