true way on compiling kernel and static iptables

May i know on how to compile the iptables in static on new kernel like 2.4.20. Ok here i have one scenario
" I am using redhat 7.2 which have kernel 2.4.7-10 and iptables 1.2.7a." so how can i upgrade the kernel to 2.4.20 and iptables 1.2.8 in static.
