Trouble installing puppy to hard drive
 

I like the program. I ran the live cd & installed it fine on another pc. But on a second one I had to create a couple partitions per instructions via internet. Pretty sure I did that right. I get to the point where a boot disk is being created on my floppy disk then a error shows up saying " a window has popped up and you need to change the "phome variable to "phome=hda5". But I see no window and no way to change that.
Also it says that the a:blahblah/bat file can not be found or something to that effect.

Any ideas?? I tried using the boot disk I created on my first pc and it would not work either.

the best thing to do in most cases is when partitioning to let linux do the job, just create the free space, don't set up the partitions and simply select guided partitioning and use the option "use largest continuous free space" that will confijure everything automatically, I asume the problem with the disk is that it is corrupt.

worked fine .. I did what u said & let linux do the job with "cfdisk". I did choose option 2 on the install but did not choose to install grub & still use floppy to boot. Next time around I will try the grub. Quick question. I used only 1000mb for my partition that has pup on it. My 20 gb hard drive is still available, right?? Thanks for the patience with this newbie.

I really like puppy & will continue to use it for various things.

well, I assume you are setting up the swap drive, in my opinion you could use something a little more...easy, what you are attempting is well...suicide, why don't you give xubuntu a try, it's small and works wonders with old hardware, I run it fine on a 700mhz cpu and 128 mb of ram on my trusty old 3490CT. I know it's not really solving the problem but you should use something to get running linux first so you can learn about these things and then resort to the harder distros later.
I have never tried puppy linux before, perhaps I should check it out. And yes the rest of ur data should be fine but if you are not sure what ur doing and you value the data I really recommend you first check what you are doing with someone else, or my good friend googly.

p.s. the error referencing to hd5 five is what it likes to refere to the swap drive as so I think it could be a problem with the way you are setting up the swap drive, also please note if you are using a floppy to boot you need to get ur bios to boot from the floppy, in the boot priorities section
